HUGYOO GUIDANCE
Wig Care & Styling Guide
Raw human hair rewards a thoughtful routine. It responds to humidity, friction, heat, water and product much like naturally growing hair, but it does not receive oils from the scalp. The aim is not to use more product—it is to handle the hair gently, keep the lace clean and add moisture where the hair needs it.
With proper care, a HUGYOO wig is designed to last 12 months or longer. Actual longevity varies with frequency of wear, texture, climate, heat, chemical processing, friction and maintenance.
Your Essential Care Kit
- A wide-tooth comb or flexible detangling brush suitable for wigs
- A mild, sulfate-free, moisturizing or color-safe shampoo
- A moisturizing conditioner suitable for color-treated human hair
- A lightweight leave-in conditioner or serum
- Heat protectant
- A microfiber towel or clean, soft cotton towel
- A stable wig stand in the correct general head size
Avoid heavy oils, petroleum-based products, thick waxes and repeated product layering. These can weigh down the hair and collect around the roots, knots and lace.
Detangle Before You Wash
Work only with patience and light tension.
- Place the wig on a stable stand or hold it securely from inside the cap.
- Divide the hair into manageable sections.
- Begin at the ends and move upward a few inches at a time.
- Support the hair above the section being detangled so you do not pull against the lace or knots.
- Use fingers first on curls and defined waves, then a wide-tooth comb only where needed.
Never begin at the roots and force a brush through a knot. Do not repeatedly brush defined waves or curls while dry; this can disturb the pattern and create unnecessary friction.
When to Wash
As a general guide, wash after approximately 7–10 wears, or when the hair shows visible product buildup, reduced movement, dryness, odor or persistent tangling. Climate, activity and styling products may change the timing. Overwashing can remove moisture and shorten the useful life of the hair.
The Wash Routine
1. Prepare
Fully detangle the dry hair. Close any band fastenings so they do not catch the hair. Use lukewarm water—never very hot water.
2. Wet in One Direction
Hold the wig so the hair falls downward. Let water travel from roots to ends. Do not soak, twist, scrub or turn the hair into a tangled bundle.
3. Clean Gently
Dilute a small amount of shampoo with water in your hands. Smooth it through the hair in a downward motion. Clean the inside of the cap and the lace carefully with fingertips, without scratching, rubbing the knots or using a nail brush.
Rinse thoroughly in the same downward direction. Repeat only if genuine buildup remains.
4. Condition the Hair, Not the Knots
Apply conditioner mainly from the mid-lengths to the ends. Gently distribute it with fingers or a wide-tooth comb. Keep heavy conditioner away from the lace, roots and knots, where residue can loosen the construction or create buildup. Allow the conditioner to work according to its directions, then rinse thoroughly with cool to lukewarm water.
5. Remove Water Without Friction
Do not wring or twist. Place the hair in a soft towel and press gently to absorb excess water. Keep the strands aligned.
Drying and Restoring the Texture
Air-drying is the gentlest method. Place the wig on a stable, appropriately sized stand, arrange the hair in its intended direction and allow it to dry completely in a ventilated area away from direct sunlight or a heat source.
For straight hair, align the strands with a wide-tooth comb while damp and finish with minimal heat only after applying protectant. For waves and curls, work in sections, apply a small amount of lightweight leave-in product, then scrunch or finger-shape the pattern. Allow it to dry without repeated touching. Separate curls only after the hair is fully dry.
Do not store a damp wig. Moisture trapped in the cap or storage bag can cause odor and affect the construction.
Refreshing Between Washes
- Straight and yaki textures: Detangle the ends, then smooth lightly with a brush suited to the texture. Use a very small amount of serum only where the hair feels dry.
- Body, loose, soft and natural waves: Mist lightly with water, reshape sections with fingers and allow them to air-dry.
- Deep wave, water wave, wet-and-wavy and 2C curly: Work in small sections with water and a light leave-in conditioner. Finger-detangle, then scrunch or coil individual areas to restore definition. Avoid dry brushing.
- Bangs and face-framing layers: Use controlled, low heat and a round brush or roller only after heat protectant. Begin with less bend than you think you need.
Heat Styling
Always apply heat protectant and begin at the lowest effective temperature. Keep tools below 350°F / 177°C. Use clean tools, limit the number of passes and test a hidden small section first, particularly on blonde, highlighted or otherwise colored hair.
Repeated high heat can dry the hair, fade color, relax the original pattern and shorten its lifespan. A heat setting that is technically below the maximum can still cause cumulative damage when used often.
Never place a hot tool directly on the lace, knots, band or cap material.
Color and Chemical Services
Coloring a finished wig should be treated as a professional service. Use a stylist experienced with human-hair wigs and always perform a strand test. Colored, highlighted, blonde and platinum styles have already been processed; we do not recommend bleaching or lightening them again.
Dye, bleach, permanent wave solutions, relaxers and other chemical services can change strength, texture and color unpredictably. Once the hair is dyed, bleached, chemically treated or cut, the wig cannot be returned or exchanged, and alteration-related damage is not considered a manufacturing defect.
Protecting the Lace and Hairline
- Handle the lace by the cap rather than pulling on individual hairs.
- Keep foundation, oils, thick product and adhesive away from the knots whenever possible.
- Clean product from the lace gently; never scrape it.
- Do not over-pluck a pre-plucked hairline.
- Adjust the band only until the cap is secure and comfortable.
- If using internal combs, avoid fragile edges and stop if you feel pulling or tenderness.
HUGYOO wigs are designed for glueless wear. If you choose to use adhesive, tape or bonding spray, follow the product manufacturer's safety directions and remove it with a suitable remover. Adhesive use is an irreversible change for return purposes and may shorten lace life if applied or removed incorrectly.
Sleep, Swimming and Exercise
We do not recommend sleeping in the wig. Pillow friction increases dryness, tangling, breakage and lace wear. Remove, detangle and store it before bed.
We do not recommend swimming in the wig. Chlorine, salt water, sunscreen, friction and wet tangling can affect the hair, color and cap. If the wig becomes wet during exercise or rain, remove it as soon as practical, gently detangle and allow the cap and hair to dry completely.
Storage and Travel
Before storage, make sure the wig is clean, completely dry and gently detangled. For short-term daily storage, use a stable stand away from sunlight, dust and heat. For longer storage or travel, arrange the hair in its natural direction, protect the lace from folding and place the wig in the supplied storage bag without compression.
Do not store the wig beneath heavy items or in a hot car. When traveling, carry it in a structured case or in hand luggage where possible.
Shedding, Tangling and Changes Over Time
A small amount of natural shedding during detangling, washing and regular wear is normal for human hair and hand-tied lace. Friction, product buildup, aggressive brushing, scratching the lace, tight comb placement and chemical processing can increase shedding.
Some tangling can occur where hair rubs against the nape, collars or textured clothing. Detangle early rather than allowing a small knot to tighten. Raw human hair may also respond to humidity or washing with subtle changes in its natural movement; this is part of working with genuine hair, not a reason to use more heat.
If you notice sudden, concentrated or unusual shedding, stop styling and email returns@hugyoohair.com with your order number, a description of your routine and clear photographs or video. We aim to respond within 24 hours.
Care and Return Eligibility
Inspect and try on your wig before beginning this routine. Cutting the lace, wearing, washing, heat styling, dyeing, bleaching, chemically treating, cutting the hair, applying adhesive or altering the cap makes the item ineligible for return as an unused product. Manufacturing concerns remain subject to inspection and applicable consumer law. Review Returns, Exchanges & Refunds before making an irreversible change.
